- My first book was "Knickerbocker's History of New York (1809) , and it gave us Knickerbocker Glory - I referred New York as ‘Gotham City’. - I helped create the idea of the modern Christmas - I am known for inspiring and encouraging young writers to pursue their craft. - I was particularly skilled at short-form writing, and many of my earliest works were humorous . - I served in the military and fought in the disastrous War of 1812. - My story “Rip Van Winkle” was inspired by a stay at my sister’s home in England . - Later in life, I shifted the focus on history and my historical work was highly romantic, reflecting the movement that would soon dominate literary writings. |
